Housing Choice Voucher Program (Section 8) Low Income Housing

It is a program of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) . Helps low-income families, seniors, and people with disabilities pay for rental housing. You can find your own housing, including duplex townhouses, single-family homes, and apartments. Housing Choice Vouchers for low income families can pay all or part of the rent.
Requirements
The requirements to apply to the program are determined by your local Public Housing Agency. A representative will determine your eligibility to receive a voucher based on:
- Your annual gross income (cannot exceed 50% of the county or metro area median income)
- If you qualify as an older adult, as a person with a disability, or as a family.
- If you are a United States citizen or have an eligible immigration status.
- Other requirements depending on the area where you reside. Contact your local PHA for more details.
How to apply to this housing choice voucher program?
If you are interested in applying for a voucher, follow these steps:
- Step 1: Contact a Public Housing Agency in your state to apply for Housing Choice Vouchers. If you need additional help, talk to your local HUD office .
- Step 2: Complete a written application or have a representative from your local Public Housing Agency (PHA) assist you.
- Step 3: The PHA representative will collect information about your family size, income, and assets.
- Step 4: The PHA will verify the information with other local agencies, your employer, and the bank. With this information you will determine your eligibility for the program and the amount of the voucher that will be awarded.
- Step 5: The voucher amount you could get would help you pay moderately priced rent in your area.
